Inuit Crafts
(Eskimo Crafts)
Children love to learn about animals!
Learning about animals of the arctic
is especially fun because of their
adaptations to such a harsh
habitat.  The recommended book
"My
Arctic 123" includes the names of
the animals in traditional Inukitut.
Step 1
Help children choose an animal from
their reading that is interesting to
them.
  • Speak with your children about the
severe habitat of the Arctic.  What do
they notice about the animals? (color,
markings, fur ect...)  How are they
different from similar animals you'd find
    in a forest habitat?
  • Look at the way each animals name is
written in Inukitut.  Talk with your
    children about how the missionaries
who came to the Arctic helped the Inuit
develop a written form of their language.
  • Encourage children to think about why
a written language would be helpful to
    Inuit culture.....and to the missionaries
    who are bringing God's word.
Step 2
Help children look for the different
colors and shapes within their
chosen picture.  How will they draw
fur of a white animal?
Step 5
Many of the illustrations in this book
have dramatic sky to express the
cool conditions of the arctic habitat.
Step 4
Once the animals are complete, use
water color to fill in the background.
Step 3
Use colored pencils or pastels to fill
in your picture.  Leave the
background colors blank for
watercolor.

animal in Inukitut.
