Japanese Paper Lantern
"Japanese
Celebrations"
by Betty Renolds

This book has lots
of different
Japanese Customs,
Traditions and
Holidays. There
were lots of
descriptions of what
the children do
during these
holidays and even
some suggested
crafts and activities.
Many of these
festivals are rooted
in Buddhism, so I
found myself
picking and
choosing parts of
the book to explore
based on my
children's
comprehension.

  • Talk with children about the paper
    lanterns they are making.  (Chochin)
  • What are some holidays we decorate
    our homes for?
The beautiful paper lanterns that adorn the streets of Japan during festivals
and holidays are like non other.  Children can make their own paper
lanterns with a little decorative paper and some simple cutting techniques!
These look fantastic hung through out your Homeschool or classroom too!
Step 1
Fold your Origami Paper in half.
Step 2
Cut strips on the fold almost to the end of
the paper.  Leave about half an inch.
Step 4
Staple at the top and the bottom of the
paper to connect the sides.  Then punch a
hole next to one of the staples.
Step 5
Thread your Raffia through the holes that
you've made.  Tie each end of into a loop
for hanging.
Step 3
Open up the paper, and wrap into a circle.
All Done!
Find a good spot to hang up your Paper
Lanterns!
