1st Grade Reference Materials
When I first started to set up my classroom, I picked up some basic reference completing
their work independently.  I feel these are important in teaching children how to search and
explore for answers to their own questions, "Mom, how do I spell carrot?" for example used
to result in me saying "C........A........R........R.......O........T" very slowly.  Now it results in, "Well,
check your dictionary, and see what you can find."  I'm telling you, this is the results in, "Well,
children to learn that they possess the ability to find answers to their own questions, and it
can start at early age levels.  So I keep some basic references available to my children at all
times.  Some I've picked up from a bookstore, others (like the mini-offices, I've made
specifically for them to use)
My First Dictionary
This dictionary is perfect for beginners! (Grade K-2) The
alphabet is presented on the edges of the pages, with a
green arrow pointing to the letter you're on.  Then within the
words are lots of pictures to aid children in recognition of
words they might be after.  My daughter loves to look up
words in this, and is very pleased when she can find it on her
own.  The definitions are easy for her to read and understand
as well.  This book is pretty inexpensive,
you can get a used
copy from www.Amazon.com for some spare change plus the
cost of shipping.  (about $4.00 total)
My Personal Review:
This Atlas is perfect for elementary aged students.  For Preschool and Kindergarten we
used
National Geographic's Our World, which provided a very simplified way to understand
the seven different continentants, as well as our Geography Mini Office (see below).  only
because I love My First Dictionary, but because of the wealth of information that is presented
photos with basic facts; a Volkswagen with information about German carmakers, a photo
of the Berlin Wall, and photos of the Bavarian castles for example.
My First Atlas
This atlas is has 128 pages full of maps, facts, annd photos of
the different countries of the world.  Information is presented
by continent, and children can learn all about individual
countries, and even world flags.  Like My First Dictionary, this
book is pretty inexpensive,
you can get a used copy from
www.Amazon.com for some spare change plus the cost of
shipping.  (about $4.00 total)
Book 1: Earth and Space
Book 2: Science and Technology
Book 3: The Natural World
Book 4: People in Place and Time
Book 5: Me and My Body
Book 6: Atlas of the World
My Personal Review:
I picked up this set of books from a used bookstore in town.  It cost me $20 for all six, and
these are some of the most used items in our home collection.  Each volume focuses on a
different topic.

Why I purchased them: These are perfect for Grades 1-3.  I wanted something that my
daughter could not only learn from today in Grade 1, but could also learn from in a year or so
down the line.  I wanted to have some books that have a permanent place in our collection,
for me to draw lessons from and for my children to reference on their own

What I like about them: These books have amazing graphics, wonderful experimental
projects, and present the information in an easy way for my children to comprehend.  (My
preschooler sits right alongside us, and can understand what I'm reading without too much
extra explanation.)  I love having these books on my shelf because they span such a wide
variety of topics that we can often find answers to our daily questions just by looking in them.
When we learned about the Five Senses we used the "Me and My Body" book, when we
learned about Maps and Land Area we used the "Atlas of the World" for reference.  They
have such a wealth of information, with easy to understand illustrations that we often use
them for our craft time activities as well.
Sissy learning about
types of Land
Sissy learning
about blood
What I dislike about them:  My only problem with these books is that they are not stories
of a mythical nature (Greek Goddesses and such)  However, the stories are presented very
minimally throughout the books, and it's very easy to skip over them if you so choose.  It's
definitely not worth missing out on these books :)

You can also purchase the books
individually if you like.
First Atlas in lieu of the Atlas they
provide.  There is nothing wrong with it, it
is just substantially less detailed and only
covers the continents.
were my own creative idea, but alas, they are not.
Though I'm not sure who exactly was the first to start I
wish I could say that these amazing little mini offices
making them, I've since found some really useful
resources you can use to make your own!  We
currently have three different Mini Offices in our
Classroom; Language, Geography, Math.  For next
year we're planning a Time & Weather Mini Office as
well.  I love these so much I've even put up a few
videos on how I made ours, and you can
find all the
links I've used from this page on another site I run.
